Just Budgies is a family business located in Mudgeeraba on the Gold Coast of Australia, and we specialise in breeding and hand-taming beautiful budgies. Our aviaries are set on over 8 acres of manicured grounds with a lake, windmill, and 300 metres of rock-pooled creek, with beautiful views up the valley towards Hinze Dam.

3 Days Old

At 1-3 days old, they are featherless and tiny, completely helpless, naked, and blind the size of your little finger nail. They are completely dependent on their parents for feeding, warmth, and care. They need to be fed regurgitated food by the parent birds. They will start to develop down feathers within the first few days to help them regulate their body temperature. Their eyes will begin to open within the first week.

3 Weeks Old

At three weeks old, budgie chicks are actively developing, with their bodies covered in a mix of down and pin feathers, and beginning to resemble miniature dinosaurs. They are increasingly mobile, holding up their heads, and their eyes are fully open. While they still rely on their parents for feeding, the frequency decreases to about every four hours, and they are starting to show more character and curiosity.

5 Weeks Old

At five weeks old, budgies are generally fledging (leaving the nest) and starting to become more independent, though they still may need some assistance with feeding. They are rapidly growing, with visible wing feathers and developing plumage. Some may be fully weaned and self-sufficient by six or seven weeks, but others may still require some hand-feeding.

8 Weeks Old

At eight weeks old, we separate them into ‘conditioning cages’ with other babies of a similar age, where they learn to socialise and, most importantly, learn budgie etiquette and the ability to live happily in their family community with other budgies. Cage conditioning also requires them to live and play inside and outside a cage; this is most important for pet birds, who must learn to bond with humans. They will be ready to go to their forever homes at about 9-10 weeks old.
